Thousands urge Rudd and Gillard to stop league tables16 November 2009The AEU's campaign against league tables is being strongly supported with thousands of protest letters sent to the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the Education Minister Julia Gillard urging them to take action on the issue.
In less than a week 3,800 online protest letters have been sent via the campaign site established by the Australian Education Union. AEU federal president Angelo Gavrielatos urged all members and supporters of public education to make their voices heard in the campaign to stop league tables. "Last week for the first time we saw the Federal Government reveal details of its new website which will include the NAPLAN results of every school in Australia," he said. "Unless the Federal Government takes action to protect students and school communities, this data will be available for anybody to use to create misleading and simplistic league tables." "Ranking schools in league tables is bad for schools, students, teachers and parents. Ms Gillard says she opposes league tables but is doing nothing to stop them." "Both the minister and prime minister need to hear directly from teachers about the damage that league tables cause and why allowing them will be such a retrograde step for education in Australia."
