Keynote Address: “Taming Toxic Workplaces", Associate Professor Verna Blewett,- Appleton Institute, CQU. Verna is an ergonomist specialising in organisational design and management. The title infers that it's workplaces that are the problem, not individuals. Verna will introduce some systems-level models for interventions that take the focus off the behaviour ('good' or 'bad') of individuals and puts the attention on the design of systems and the management of organisations where interventions can have the biggest impact. Verna will introduce the concept of managing within a culture (using diversity) rather than trying to "manage culture"; primary, secondary and tertiary interventions for dealing with psychosocial matters; a model that makes thinking about the way organisations work logical and will include assessing organisational improvements. This conference will provide legal information, inspiration, tools and time for leaders, HSRs and other workplace activists to equip them to take a leadership role in minimising or removing "toxicity" in their DECD & TAFE workplaces. “Leading” implies the positive leadership role members can take. “Taming toxic workplaces" implies action. Work environments may become "toxic" because of human (bullying, violence, ineffective consultation, work overload, precarious employment) or physical factors (eg chemical hazards, asbestos, practical classes or building projects.)
