Coming Up: Regional New Educators Conference (Sth East Members Only)

21-07-2010

Are you in your first 5 years of teaching in the South East?

The AEU has a FREE New Educator Conference happening regionally on August 29 and 30.

The conference program focuses on very practical aspects of being a new teacher in the South East and has been organised by local beginning teachers.

The topics include:

  • Classroom Management and Cooperative Learning – methodology in the classroom and practical hints and tips.
  • Presentation by the AEU Federal President - what is happening in education around the country and what should you know about?
  • New Educators working together. This year’s regional conference is in conjunction with Victorian beginning teachers and you can compare stories and find out what it's like for others in the same boat. You might talk jobs or career pathways or coping strategies or where to get the best pub meal!
  • Entitlements and salaries – find out what you are entitled to, what you can access if you need to, and what your responsibilities are – all in a very safe and private environment.

AEU workshops and conferences always aim to be interactive and participant driven and we fund travel and accommodation for participants.

Travel

We have structured this year’s conference so that you can play sport on Saturday, travel on Sunday morning if required, attend the conference Sunday afternoon/evening and Monday, then travel home Monday afternoon/evening. We will start with lunch on Sunday at 12:30pm.

Accommodation and food

AEU beginning teachers have selected The Barn Convention Centre, a great restaurant/convention centre about 10 minutes out of Mount Gambier, as the conference venue. They do a mean steak and the Sunday evening conference dinner is free for participants! As is lunch on Sunday and Monday. and for those living outside of Mount Gambier, accommodation and breakfast is funded by the AEU. There are limited accommodation places; accommodation is based on a shared room arrangement. If there is someone you would like to share a room with please let us know in the notes on the registration page. Please also let us know of any special dietary requirements (particularly if you are vegetarian).

All in all this is a conference especially for teachers who are early in their career and it will be well worth giving up some time and writing those reliefs in order to be a part of it!

If you’d like to register please talk to your school about booking a relief teacher for Monday August 30 (we will provide you with the voucher for the relief teacher if you have a class so your school will not be out of pocket) and then register online today.

If you’d like to see a draft program please contact me at slislemenzel@aeusa.asn.au (we are still confirming details).

We look forward to seeing you there!

By the way, we understand that many people have won permanent positions in the first round of local selection. If you are one of those people we’d love to know and to be able to say ‘congratulations!' Please drop me a line at slislemenzel@aeusa.asn.au.

If you were not successful in this stage, there is another round of ‘Stage 1’ positions being advertised early in August, so get those personal statements ready! Good luck and we'd love to hear how you go.
