Nearly two-thousand apply for new positions

DECS has received around 1800 applications for positions made available through the State Government's Teacher Renewal Scheme, according to a report in today's Advertiser.

AEU President Correna Haythorpe, commenting in the piece said that the number of applications is evidence that gaining permanent work is a big problem for Education graduates.

"The lack of permanent jobs is the biggest disincentive they (teaching graduates) see to work in the industry," she told the Advertiser.

Ms Haythorpe also drew a link between the difficulties gaining permanent work and the exodus of South Australian teachers to other states and overseas.

In advertising the 100 or so jobs to teachers who graduated in 2008 or after, DECS has come under fire from AEU members who have been on the contract merry-go-round for years and unable to secure permanent employment.

"I've been a contract teacher for 15 years now and not been placed into a permanent position. DECS announce that 100 jobs become available and apparently I'm not eligible to apply. It's just not right," said the member, who asked not to be identified.

A number of AEU members have lodged complaints with the Equal Opportunity Commission and the AEU expects more to follow. Keep an eye on the AEU website for more information as it comes to hand.
