World Teachers’ Day (WTD) is an initiative of UNESCO and Education International, the international teacher organisation to which the AEU is affiliated. World Teachers' Day has been celebrated internationally since 1994 and in Australia will be celebrated on Friday 28 October.

The day provides an opportunity to draw attention to the important role of teachers within our communities. Celebrated in over 100 countries World Teachers’ Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex, multicultural and technological society.

WTD is a day on which students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for the professional and at times personal contributions that teachers have made to their communities. WTD is your day!

The theme for WTD this year is Teachers for Gender Equality.

Australia is not alone when it comes to the teaching profession consisting mostly of women. The world over, education continues to be seen as a career path for women.

Despite measures taken by unions and governments to ensure that equality is enshrined into the policies and constitutions of many countries many women teachers around the world continue to work and live in environments that are far from equitable.

WTD is an opportunity for teachers and communities all over the world to celebrate the profession of teaching and to promote gender equality and international standards for all workers.
