Step 9 process progressing well in most sites

Member contact would indicate that the Step 9 process is progressing well in most schools and preschools. However, members have also indicated that there is still a level of confusion regarding the process in some sites which is deterring members who meet the eligibility requirements from applying for this new classification.

In such instances, members and sub-branches are advised to refer to information provided on the AEU website and the Circular issued by DECS on 15 September which contains useful information and clarifies the criteria for eligibility as defined by the Full Bench in the Arbitration Decision. These sources of information are consistent with the Commission's determinations and should assist in any instances of disagreement or dispute in a process that aims to acknowledge the skills, knowledge and experience of teachers who meet the relevant requirements.

The AEU is monitoring the implementation of Step 9 and will support all members in ensuring that the process is managed fairly and in line with the Award provisions. We encourage all eligible Step 8 teachers to lodge their applications prior to the end of October, unless they have already negotiated an extension to the end of Term 4.

IMPORTANT

Applications for Step 9 will be assessed only against Attachment 1 to Schedule 3 of the South Australian Education Staff (Government Preschools and Schools) Arbitrated Enterprise Bargaining Award 2010.

The Award does not require any material not specifically identified in the Award to be provided by a teacher in connection with Step 9. However, this does not preclude teachers from choosing to provide additional material to support their application to Step 9.

The above information is intended to assist with the application process but does not impose requirements which must be adhered to in order to apply for and achieve Step 9.
