Senate inquiry into the use of NAPLAN results

The Australian Education Union has welcomed the establishment of a Senate inquiry
into the use of student performance data.

AEU Federal President Angelo Gavrielatos said: “This is an important inquiry which will
look at the public reporting of NAPLAN data and what safeguards can be put in place to
stop the information being misused in ways that are damaging to schools and school
communities.

“We have seen student data repeatedly used to create damaging league tables
inappropriately ranking schools," he said

“We will be encouraging parents, teachers and the wider community to participate in this
inquiry,” he added.

The inquiry will be carried out by the Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
References Committee. The public will be able to make submissions until June 25.

Public hearings are expected to be then held in July with the committee required to
report to the Senate on August 13.
