Stage 2 Decision a win for women

The much anticipated IRC Stage 2 Arbitration Decision has proven to be a significant win for all AEU members but particularly for women in education.  Many of the decisions will impact largely on the dedicated women that work in education in South Australia.  The most obvious changes which are going to improve the workload and conditions of women in education are:

• Changes in ‘face to face’ teaching and NIT
• Class sizes – caps have been placed on class size averages, therefore stopping a creep that would have occured under the proposed DECS funding model..
• A review of teachers’ and leaders’ work with a view to simplifying, reducing or better managing the administrative load on teachers and leaders
• The finding by the Commission that there is an unacceptable level of short term and temporary employees – including SSOs, teachers and TAFE lecturers – will no doubt result in a substantial number of conversions to permanency
• The Commission’s decision to include an additional adult in all special classes will result in an increase in available hours for SSOs in schools
• The Commission's finding that the excessive hours of 'good will' worked by SSOs must be remedied and can no longer be tolerated, should result in better school based practices.
