AEU Members. Non-members can join the AEU SA which will enable them to attend our professional development program.


This practical workshop is organised by the AEU SA and members of the AEUSA Branch Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Consultative Committee to support schools as safe places free from homophobic bullying and harassment.

The aims of the workshop are to:

  • facilitate awareness raising in schools about the issues for students 
  • support the development of regional networks

The workshop will cover:

  • Understanding gender diversity and sexual diversity  
  • Australian statistics including prevalence of homophobia and transphobia and impact on students’ mental health, wellbeing and educational outcomes 
  • Strategies for creating safe and inclusive schools and classrooms 
  • How to respond to student disclosures  
  • Supporting transgender students 
  • Brief overview of Safe Schools Coalition Australia

This workshop has been mapped against the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:

  • 4.Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
  • 4.Engage in professional learning
  • 7.Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community

A catered lunch is provided.
